When the decorations come down in the New Year, don’t forget to recycle your natural Christmas tree at one of 16 collection points across Donegal.

This FREE service runs from Saturday 3rd January – Saturday 24th January 2026

Domestic trees only and please remember to remove all decorations!

Recycle Right this Christmas

Bring Banks in Donegal are for glass bottles and jars (and sometimes aluminium cans) but not plastic bottles.

Plastic bottles and aluminium cans with the Re-turn logo should go through Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme at participating retailers. Get your deposit back and recycle right!

Donegal Landowners Invited to Create a ‘Hare’s Corner’ for Nature – Hassle-Free Support Available

County Donegal landowners now have a unique opportunity to make space for nature on their land. From January 1st to January 18th, 2026, applications will open for The Hare’s Corner, an innovative biodiversity initiative coordinated by Burrenbeo Trust in partnership with the Donegal County Council.

Development Fund Initiative 2026 now available to support initiatives in various forms of development including: economic, social, cultural & heritage which will benefit local communities, areas and groups

Apply Online Development Fund Initiative 2026

Historic Structures Fund

The Historic Structures Fund will offer grants from €50,000 up to €200,000, to assist the conservation and enhancement of historic structures and buildings for the broader benefit of communities and the public.

Festival Funding from Fáilte Ireland.

Donegal County Council is now taking applications for the 2026 round of festival funding from Fáilte Ireland.

The aim of this Scheme is to support festivals and events in County Donegal. The supported events must help to drive domestic and international tourism arrivals to Donegal, win bed nights, stimulate local economic activity, and help to improve the visitor experience in the county.

The application period will close at 5pm on Friday 6th February 2026.

The Heritage Organisations Support Fund

The Heritage Organisations Support Fund, that provides financial support to not-for-profit non-governmental organisations working in the heritage sector, is now open for applications. The Heritage Council scheme enables heritage organisations to fund staff salaries, rent costs, the hiring of new staff, training and skills development and piloting new ways of working. Applications can be made on-line on the Heritage Council’s on-line grants management system until 5 p.m. on Monday, 26 January 2026.

Local Enhancement Programme 2026 – Application process will open in late January 2026.

The Local Enhancement Programme 2026 (LEP) will provide capital funding to support the many small community groups and organisations in the county - particularly those who serve disadvantaged areas in rural and urban areas.

For the next 10 homeowners who progress to Stage 4 and enter a contract with NWEA for full energy upgrade works (to B2+ rating) in 2025, will avail of this generous discount.

This offer is supported by the EU LIFE funded LEAP Project, which has helped the establishment of the NWEA in Donegal.

These new funding opportunities will support creativity, connection and wellbeing across the island of Ireland and are available through;

1. Creative Health & Wellbeing in the Community, Local Authority Partnerships Grant Call (with a Shared Island dimension)

2. Creative Communities on a Shared Island – Local Authority Partnerships with Creative and Community Organisations Grant Call

3. Creative Youth Nurture Fund Grant Call (with a Shared Island dimension)
